Biodynamic
The sprawling Southern Rhone stretches 80 kilometers plus in length, encompassing many vineyards and varying geology. Just north of Gigondas you’ll find Seguret. An appellation we don’t see a lot of in Australia, and one of the 22 villages permitted to call their wine Cotes du Rhone Village.
It was in the village of Seguret that Pablo Höcht established Domaine du Creve Coeur in 2010. Pablo grew up here, his father Joseph a painter and artist of German origin received a grant in the 70's to move to the region and paint the Provence landscape. This creative connection still influences Pablo and the labels for his village wines feature one of his father's paintings.
The original 5 hectares has grown now to 8ha, with all farming being done in organic and biodynamics since the beginning. In the early days of establishing his domaine Pablo continued to work as the cellar master at nearby Chateau St Cosme.
A large proportion of Pablo’s vineyards are located above the village at an altitude between 250 – 300 meters. Here he has many small terraces surrounded by the forest where the mistral winds roll off the Dentelles de Montmirail. The soils in Seguret are limestone marl. In the neighbouring village Sablet, where he also has plots, they consist of sandy limestone.
Domaine de Crève Coeur isn’t your typical Southern Rhone producer. Pablo produces honest digestible wines with a freshness rarely seen in the region. Fine tuned and a joy to drink.
“GOODNESS KNOWS THE APPELLATION OF SEGURET AND SABLET NEEDED NEW ENERGY, AND PABLO HÖCHT HAS DONE WHAT HE CAN TO PROVIDE IT.” — JON BONNE, THE NEW FRENCH WINE
